Indifference or Misspecification? The Distributional Impacts of Indifference on Dichotomous Choice Contingent Valuation
نویسنده
چکیده
Dichotomous choice (or Referendum) contingent valuation surveys have become the predominate choice for valuing goods and services otherwise not valued in a standard market (nonmarket goods and services). A number of researchers have recently recommended that dichotomous choice contingent valuation studies include a follow-up question to all no responses to determine whether the no response is a result of unwillingness to pay, or indifference. If the goal of the study is to investigate the impact of covariates on either mean willingness to pay or the probability of indifference, simple identification of indifferent individuals will not suffice. A simulation study shows that existing econometric models designed to account for indifference are extremely sensitive to misspecification bias. Accurate identification of the probability of indifference is hampered by potential misspecification of the distribution of willingness to pay. a The author wishes to thank Ted McConnell, John Whitehead, and Ju-Chin Huang for helpful discussions in developing this paper. Valuing Recreational Benefits in an Aquatic Ecosystem Area with Contingent Valuation Method: Case of ShirinSou Wetland, Iran
In this study, the recreational value of ShirinSou Wetland of the Kabodarahang County in Hamadan Province, Iran was estimated and the visitors' willingness to Pay (WTP) was measured by using Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) and One and One Half Bound model (OOHB) dichotomous choice (DC) questionnaire. The results show that 81 percent of investigating individuals will pay for recreational usage...
متن کاملRisk-based Indifference Pricing under a Stochastic Volatility Model
This paper considers a risk-based approach for indifference valuation of contingent claims in the context of a continuous-time stochastic volatility model. Since the market in the model is incomplete there is more than one arbitrage-free price of an option. We adopt a risk-based approach to select a seller’s and a buyer’s indifference price for the option contract. A convex risk measure is used...
متن کاملExponential utility indifference valuation in a general semimartingale model
We study the exponential utility indifference valuation of a contingent claim H when asset prices are given by a general semimartingale S. Under mild assumptions on H and S, we prove that a no-arbitrage type condition is fulfilled if and only if H has a certain representation. In this case, the indifference value can be written in terms of processes from that representation, which is useful in ...
متن کاملForward Exponential Performances: Pricing and Optimal Risk Sharing
In a Markovian stochastic volatility model, we consider financial agents whose investment criteria are modelled by forward exponential performance processes. The problem of contingent claim indifference valuation is first addressed and a number of properties are proved and discussed. Special attention is given to the comparison between the forward exponential and the backward exponential utilit...
متن کاملConstruct Validity of Dichotomous and Polychotomous Choice Contingent Valuation Questions* Running Head: Validity of DC and PC Contingent Valuation
In this note we conduct construct validity tests for dichotomous choice (DC) and polychotomous choice (PC) contingent valuation questions. Contrary to previous results, we find that DC and PC estimates of willingness to pay are theoretically valid, convergent valid, and similar in terms of statistical precision. Similar to previous results, PC respondents are less sensitive to information than ...
